Eight King’s College students, under the direction of history department faculty members Daniel Clasby and Thomas Mackaman, have conducted extensive research on the 1919 Baltimore Mine Tunnel Disaster in Wilkes-Barre.

The research effort was undertaken in response to a request to King’s from the Wilkes-Barre Mayor’s office for assistance.  The Mayor’s office was contacted by Katie Laverly, a local resident whose two uncles were among the 92 miners killed in the incident.

The research has included information directly related to the incident as well as general information about 1919 Wilkes-Barre.  The group did complete an application for a state historical marker and presented their findings at the annual conference of the State Historical Society held recently in Harrisburg.

Anabaptist scholar Dr. Donald Kraybill of Elizabethtown University will discuss “What’s Amish about Amish Business? McGowan School of Business, located on North River Street. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held on Feb. 6.

He is editor of “Young Center Books in Anabaptist and Pietist Studies,” a series published by the Johns Hopkins University Press.

Dr. Kraybill has authored more than 20 books, and received numerous awards including the National Religious Book Award for “The Upside Down Kingdom.” He has authored or coauthored seven books on Amish life and culture, including “The Riddle of Amish Culture,” “The Amish and the State,” and “Amish Enterprise: From Plows to Profits.”
