September 16, 2013 - King’s College was recently awarded a grant of almost $88,000 from the National Science Foundation to purchase a differential scanning calorimeter which will be used for both undergraduate chemistry classes and for cooperative faculty/student research in interdisciplinary subject areas.

The calorimeter will by used by faculty members in the chemistry department and will support collaborative research in polymer science, biochemistry, and catalyst science.

“Funding of this proposal will significantly impact the level and capability of both faculty research and science education at King’s by opening doors to studies that were never able to be conducted at the College previously,” according to the grant application prepared by Dr.  Isaac VonRue, assistant professor of chemistry and principal investigator for the project.

“Polymeric materials are such a vital part of modern technology that some have asserted that we are currently living in the Polymer Age,” VonRue wrote in the grant application.  “As new and unique polymers are developed, it is of great importance to perform thermal analysis on them to determine the usable temperature range for the newly synthesized polymer.”

According to grant information provided by Dr. Julie Belanger and Dr. Ron Supkowski, co-principal investigators for the grant, the calorimeter will also enable research in the synthesis and characterization of novel lipids and liposomes as well as silica used as a support for a wide variety of chemical catalysts.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950.

A traditional Red Mass was celebrated recently in the King’s College Chapel of Christ the King. The Mass is held annually on the same day as the opening session of the United States Supreme Court to invoke God’s blessing upon members of the legal profession, including members of the King’s College community and the Wilkes-Barre Law and Library Association. A Red Mass has been hosted at King’s since 2002.

The name “Red Mass” comes from the color of the vestments worn by the presider and co-celebrants, the scarlet robes of attending justices, and the gowns of law professors.  Members of the Luzerne County legal community attended the Mass and luncheon that followed.

King’s College To Continue Learning Works Program; Program Receives Grant

King’s College has assumed leadership of a program designed to increase the involvement of local low-income families in their children’s education and that provides college students to serve as tutors for the fifth through eighth grade students.

The program, titled Learning Works, was established in early 2012 by the local office of Volunteers of America with assistance from King’s.  Since then, all 80 middle school students who participated in the program have improved their grades in at least one subject area and some have improved in more than one area, according to Bill Bolan, director of the Shoval Center for Community Engagement and Learning at King’s.

The program recently was awarded a TANF Youth Services contract of more than $48,000 from the Luzerne Schuylkill Workforce Investment Board to conduct the program, including hiring three Learning Works coaches who work side-by-side with parents during weekly home visits to provide additional academic support to their children.  The coaches also work with the participants’ siblings and refer families to any needed social services or economic support.

Approximately 35 students from Kistler Elementary, Meyers Junior High and State Street Elementary schools are spending one afternoon each week on the King’s campus working one-on-one with student tutors on academic assistance and career exploration workshops led by King’s faculty members and local community members.  The tutors and students complete the visit with a meal in the College’s Campus Center.

Some sessions also include a financial literacy component; training in research, writing, and public speaking in preparation for a presentation held at the end of each semester; and a focus on literacy through the Read-a-Rama Program.

King’s Receives Grant to Support Sciences Curriculum

$

King’s College recently received a $75,000 grant from The George I. Alden Trust of Worcester, Mass.  The funds will be used to purchase a fluorescent microscope for the biology and chemistry departments and also to acquire materials for 10 physics experiments designed to investigate the fundamental properties of matter, light and energy.

King's recently introduced a new physics degree program that affords students an opportunity to earn a traditional bachelor of science degree in physics from King's, to acquire secondary education certification in physics, or to participate in a new cooperative engineering program with the University of Notre Dame.  In the engineering program, students will spend three years at King’s College taking mathematics, physics, science, pre-engineering and liberal arts courses, and then transfer to Notre Dame for two years to complete engineering courses in their chosen field. Upon successful completion of the five-year program, students will receive both a Bachelor of Science from King’s College (in Physics, Chemistry, or Computer Science) and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Notre Dame (in Aerospace, Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering).  Since some of the courses taken at Notre Dame will fulfill King’s degree requirements, students will be conferred their degree from King’s upon successful completion of the program at Notre Dame.

The bachelor’s degree program and University of Notre Dame engineering affiliation allows King’s College an opportunity to address the shortage of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) graduates from U.S. colleges and universities.

The biology and chemistry departments will use the fluorescent microscope in a variety of laboratory capacities and to further cooperative research activities involving faculty and students.  Specifically, the microscope will be used for teaching and research in immunology as well as molecular, micro and cell biology.  The microscope will also be used for activities involving cell counting and liposome research.

Funds from the grant were also used to purchase a system of probes to investigate microbial activity during growth and fermentation and also two small instruments for microbiology labs to detect light production from luminescent bacteria and fluorescence from cyanobacteria and algae.

The grant application was prepared jointly by Dr. David Glick, professor of biology, and Dr. Kristi Concannon, associate professor of physics, with assistance from Dr. Julie Belanger, assistant professor of chemistry.

The Alden Trust was established in 1912 for the general purpose of "the maintenance of some charitable or philanthropic enterprises" with particular expressed interest in "the promotion of education in schools, colleges, or other educational institutions".

King’s previously received support from the Alden Trust for projects in the College’s education department and Genomics Center.

King’s Announces Bachelor’s Degree Program in Exercise Science

For the second consecutive academic year, King’s College has developed a new bachelor’s degree academic program that builds on existing College strengths and responds to an expanding need and job market.

A bachelor of science program in exercise science will be offered to students entering King’s in fall 2014.  The program is designed for students who have an interest in the sciences of health promotion, wellness, and fitness.  The program is also expected to attract students that are interested in a more general program than offered by the College’s existing pre-professional degree programs in physician assistant studies and athletic training.  King’s successfully introduced a new degree program in physics and a cooperative engineering degree program with the University of Notre Dame this past fall.

According to information supplied by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, market demand for occupations suitable for exercise science graduates are expected to grow faster than average demand for all other occupations.  The job market for positions including personal trainer, strength and conditioning coach, exercise physiologist, and nutritionist are expected to grow between 20-30 percent through 2020.  Aggregately, approximately 61,000 new jobs are expected to be created in the field over a ten-year period.

“The development of this program is a natural progression for King’s College as it follows its mission of providing students with an excellent liberal arts education while also preparing them for an ever-changing job market,” said Father John Ryan, C.S.C., president.  “While 10 new courses will be designed for the new major, degree candidates will also take courses in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, education and psychology.”

“The exercise science classrooms and labs will be part of the academic space in the renovated Ramada Inn in downtown Wilkes-Barre,” added Father Ryan.  “The College fully expects that the facility will be state-of-the-art and allow for world-class instruction in not only exercise science, but also physician assistant studies and athletic training.”

“In this ever-changing environment of legal requirements and consumer demand for health insurance, businesses and insurance organizations are expected to recognize the benefits of health and fitness programs for their employees, further increasing the demand for specialized workers in these areas,” said Jeremy Simington, chair of the department of sports medicine and the department of exercise science.
