Robert P. Wolensky, adjunct professor of history and sociology at King's College, was recently awarded a Fulbright fellowship for a research project based at the University of Exeter in England. King’s College Education Programs Reaccredited for Maximum Term

$

The Education Department at King’s College was recently reaccredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).  This accreditation covers the department’s initial teacher preparation programs and its post bachelor’s degree teacher preparation programs.

The Education Department offers bachelor’s degree programs in PK-4 (pre-school – grade 4), and specified secondary areas (grades 7-12) in biology, chemistry, citizenship, English, French, general science, mathematics, physics, social studies and Spanish. The department also offers special education courses to students who wish to obtain dual certification in either PK-8 or 7-12. Additionally, advanced degree programs are offered for reading specialist certification, English as a Second Language (ESL) certification and an autism endorsement. A post-baccalaureate program or “Fast Track” route to initial certification is available to all candidates who have earned a bachelor’s degree and who have an appropriate major.

King’s College’s Education Department remains the only Wyoming Valley institution of higher learning and one of only four private colleges or universities in Pennsylvania to earn this prestigious accreditation. The program received its initial five-year NCATE accreditation in 2008.

The accreditation does not include individual education courses that the institution offers to P-12 educators for professional development, relicensure, or other purposes.

The mission of the Education Department is to “prepare reflective practitioners who are recognized for their vision, motivation, knowledge, skills and dispositions as they develop, manage and monitor communities of learning in a diverse and complex world.”

The King’s undergraduate and graduate programs met every NCATE standard, including candidates knowledge, skills and dispositions; assessment system and unit evaluation; field experiences and clinical practice; diversity; faculty qualifications, performance and development; and, unit governance and resources.

NCATE (www.ncate.org) accredits more than 600 institutions of higher learning by insuring adherence to performance-oriented standards.  NCATE accredited institutions produce two-thirds of the nation’s new education graduates each year.

“This accreditation would not have been possible without the assistance of the local education community,” said Nicholas Holodick, Vice president for Academic Affairs at King’s.  “Many of the members of the local education community who we work with on student teaching and other projects were invaluable resources in sharing information on the King’s program with NCATE representatives."

NCATE accreditation standards incorporate the model state licensing principles developed by a task force of the Council of Chief State School Officers.  The U.S. Department of Education recognizes NCATE as a specialized accrediting body for schools, colleges, and departments of education. Founded in 1954 by the teaching profession and the states, NCATE is composed of more than 30 professional and policymaker organizations.

“King’s is very excited to offer these graduate degree cooperative programs with our Holy Cross Congregation ‘sister’ school, the University of Notre Dame,” said Father John Ryan, C.S.C., King’s president.  “The College’s ability to partner with the prestigious Mendoza College of Business provides King’s students from a wide variety of majors a wonderful opportunity to combine their bachelor’s degree with concentrated studies in business to accelerate their professional and personal development.  An added bonus is that the University of Notre Dame curriculum mirrors the emphasis on ethical behavior established at King’s.”

The Master of Science in Accountancy (MSA) Program is for students who receive an accounting degree from King’s.  Students successfully completing the program will also earn the minimum 150 credits necessary to earn a Certified Public Accountant license following successful completion of the CPA exam.

The MSA Program at the Mendoza College of Business was rated the top master’s program for its size in America by the 2013 “Public Accounting Report” and had a 100% placement rate for 2013 graduates with 83% of those graduates placed with a Big Four accounting firm.

Accounting majors at King’s are part of the College’s William G. McGowan School of Business, which is accredited by AACSB International, - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business - which represents the highest standard of achievement for business schools worldwide.  AACSB Accreditation is the hallmark of excellence in business education, and has been earned by less than five percent of the world's business programs, including King’s College and the University of Notre Dame.

“The education a student receives from the McGowan School of Business emphasizes an awareness of personal values, character development, and an understanding of liberal learning competencies applied in a business context,” said Barry H. Williams, dean.  “The MSA Program will build upon the successful outcomes received from an accounting bachelor’s degree from King’s with a master’s degree in accounting from the world-class Mendoza College of Business.”

The Master of Science in Business (MSB) Program will be open to King’s students who earn a bachelor’s degree in a non-business major.

The MSB program requires 44 credits over an 11-month period, with summer, fall and spring terms.  The curriculum provides students with an in-depth exposure to various aspects of business, such as finance, accounting marketing and management.  “A unique aspect of the MSB program is the ‘Bridge’ course sequence that allows students to integrate their non-business background into their business studies.  The students get to network with Notre Dame alumni with similar backgrounds, which helps them develop their own personal brand and career track,” notes Paul Lamore, program coordinator at King’s.

King’s College and the University of Notre Dame introduced a dual bachelor’s degree program in engineering which began with first-year students who entered King’s in August 2013.  The program attracted more than double its goal for student participants and continues to draw stronger than expected interest from prospective students who wish to earn degrees from both King’s College and the University of Notre Dame.

The Mendoza College of Business has been consistently ranked among the top 20 United States business schools and as the number one school for ethics and corporate social responsibility by “Bloomberg Businessweek”.

The King’s College Theatre Department will stage the classic musical comedy, “Guys and Dolls,” based on the book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, and featuring Frank Loesser’s timeless score, at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 13-15 and Feb. 20-22, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, in the George P. Maffei II Theatre.

“Guys and Dolls” will feature actors John Bubul, West Pittston (Benny Southstreet); Elizabeth DeMichele, Wilkes-Barre (Miss Adelaide); Rev. Richard Hockman C.S.C (Arvide Abernathy); Matthew Kropp, Laurel Run (Sky Masterson); D.J. Nat, Plains (Rusty Charlie); Suzana Silva, Waterbury, Conn., (Sarah Brown); Lukas R.
